Induced to Judder [Playlist - 10/15/09]

It seems when it rains here in Charlottesville (musically), it pours. Lots of great shows coming our way including Eli Cook’s cd release party at Rivals 10/24; he is also opening for Robert Cray Saturday at the Paramount. Friday Richard Thompson comes to the Paramount while the British funk band, the New Mastersounds are at the Outback Lodge 11/4, and Rickie Lee Jones is coming to the Paramount 10/20. We also featured Robert Jospe & Inner Rhythm, who are performing Friday at PVCC. Eli Cook was live in the studio to discuss and play his new cd Static in the Blood and played a couple of tunes live. We finished the show in New Orleans featuring music from the Orleans Records label, which needs to be continued to another show. Red beans and ricely yours.

The Juddermeister kicked the show off with a blast from the past featuring Bobby Keys blowing sax solo in Can’t You Hear Me Knocking. From there we headed down to New Orleans for a set of tunes followed by a featured set celebrating New Orleans artist Little Freddie King, who will be performing tomorrow at the Veritas Vineyard. The second hour was dedicated to the modern jazz sphere featuring many new recordings recently received at the station, including my possible favorite disc of the year, the live recording of saxophonist extraordinaire, James Carter and his friends at the Blue Note called Heaven on Earth.

Induced to Judder [Playlist - 10/09/08]

Themes: The Juddermeister started the show with a new live recording from Mavis Staples, and then did a set of artists playing this weekend in the area, which included George Melvin’s B-3 artistry followed by Mali guitarist, Vieux Farka Toure and soul belter, Howard Tate both playing in the Richmond Folk Festival, followed by the New Orleans jamband, Galactic & trumpeter, Shamarr Allen playing Toad’s Place in Richmond on Friday. The second set featured the music experienced last Sunday at the 4th annual DC Jazz Festival that presented the Taj Mahal Trio, Christian McBride Quartet, trombonist, Conrad Herwig’s Latin Project, and the McCoy Tyner Quartet. The final set showcased new additions to the jazz library including the Rolling Stones’ touring sax man, Tim Ries with his second release of Rolling Stones jazz covers, guitarist, and Will Bernard’s new Palmetto recording with help from John Medeski and Stanton Moore. We concluded with two tunes from New Orleans artists with new releases… the B-3 master Joe Krown and my all-time fav the Iguanas with their first release of new music in five years.

Induced to Judder [Playlist - 9/18/08]

Themes: The Juddermeister began the show with a tribute to one of the great Motown songwriters and musical producers, Norman Whifield, who passed away Wednesday night 9/17/08. The Temptations were Whitfield’s main focus and wrote many of their hits and produced many of their recordings. The second set featured new jazz releases by female clarinetist Anat Cohen, pianist & composer Carla Bley (and her big band) along with saxophonist Kenny Garrett. Of the four in this set of music… the new recording from pianist McCoy Tyner (with rhythm section of Ron Carter & Jack DeJohnette) used various guitarist on each cut. We featured Greensleeves and Derek Trucks. The second hour we went down to Louisiana for a showcase of slide guitarist Sonny Landreth with his new release From the Reach along with other artists that have used Sonny’s guitar on their recordings as a sideman. As a final note local guitarist Rick Olivarez was part of both the Johnny Sansone & Mel Melton recordings; local bassist Steve Riggs was in Sansone’s band too.
